Born in Chiayi, Taiwan, Hungwen Tsai graduated from the Institute of Ethnomusicology of Tainan University of the Arts with a Master's Degree in Ethnomusicology. His main research focus is shakuhachi making and musical instrument research. He is currently a Lecturer in the shakuhachi program of Wuhan Conservatory of Music, Honorary President of the Xi'an Shakuhachi Research Association, and Honorary Dean of the Luyou DiXiao Culture Research Institute. He is the first scholar to offer a shakuhachi course at a professional music college in Taiwan and China.
