T M (Tim) Hoffman performing artist, professor, author & translator, and NPO director Born and raised in USA, with four decades in Asia (Japan 27 yrs, India 7, Sri Lanka 2, etc). Trained by renowned masters in piano (Grace Mundorf Myers, USA); Japanese shakuhachi flute (Yamaguchi Goro, Tokyo); Hindustani vocal music (Pandit Ganesh Prasad Mishra, Lucknow); also sitar, tabla, and Javanese gamelan and Korean music. Honors graduate of four universities in USA, Japan & India – Grossmont College (San Diego), International Christian University (Tokyo), University of Hawaii/East-West Center (Honolulu), Bhatkhande College of Music (Lucknow); research in others. Presently Lecturer in Ethnomusicology and Asian Studies in Keio University International Center (Tokyo); formerly at Musashino Academia Musicae (Tokyo, 16 yrs). In India in 1992, Hoffman completed 5-year Visharad degrees in Hindustani classical vocal music (later introducing Japanese poetic texts into thumri & khyal forms) and flute (with U.P. gov’t permission using Japanese shakuhachi - now officially an instrument of Hindustani classical music); also 3-yr Madhyama degree in tabla. As Senior Performing & Creative Artist Fellow of American Institute of Indian Studies, a 2006-2008 R & D project “Asian Classical Crossover – Indian classical music on the Japanese koto” included placement of koto instruments in three major Indian universities. He continues to perform this ‘Asian classical crossover’ music, based on decades of research and trials, throughout Asia & in the West, including India Int’l Centre, IGNCA, NCPA, Delhi University, BHU, IITs, A.I.R.; Princeton U, Cornell U, Center for World Music, VOA, NHK; London University, Dhaka University. Hoffman has authored Raga for Shakuhachi and Koto and other works in Japanese, numerous journal articles in Japan and India, also translated fiction and poetry and scholarly works published in Unesco, Oxford University Press, national publishers of India, Sri Lanka, others. He is a consultant and presenter in international musicology conferences worldwide. Awards from U.P. Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh (India), Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan, East-West Center, American Institute of Indian Studies, other. As Director of NPO Indo-Japanese Music Exchange Association (established 1989), he has organized music tours in Japan & India for artists of both cultures, and produced and directed scores of intercultural stage events and CDs (for JVC and others), including as main artist in INTEGRAL ASIA which includes Benares gharana doyen Pandit Ganesh Prasad Mishra, Japan's premier koto artist Nosaka Keiko, India's National Kathak Kendra tabla artist Probir Mittra and others. < website : www.ijmea.com >
