Ōkushi Adō

Born in Tokushima Prefecture on October 3, 1919, Ōkushi Adō (birth name Tegami), studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Nawa Keidō starting in 1933. He continued his shakuhachi studies while a practicing internist and professor of medicine at Tokushima University. Nawa Keidō gave him the performance name Adō in 1946 and, in 1965 he was awarded his shihan (masters/teaching license) by Kawase Junsuke II and Chikuyusha in Tokyo. He was well-known for facilitating monthly study groups that included members of both the Wafū-kai and Chikuyusha, as well as bi-monthly workshops with Kunie Fujii. His shakuhachi career spanned more than 30 years.
