Tokumaru Jūmei

A distinguished shakuhachi performer, Tokumaru Jūmei began learning the instrument under the guidance of his father at an early age. He holds both undergraduate and graduate degrees in shakuhachi performance from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, where he now serves as a part-time lecturer. A direct student of the late Yamaguchi Gorō (Living National Treasure), Tokumaru has showcased his talent globally, with performances across Europe, the United States, Russia, India, and Africa. Since his debut recital in 2007, Tokumaru has given seven solo recitals and, in 2021, completed an ambitious series of twelve recitals dedicated to the 36 pieces of the Kinko-ryū shakuhachi repertoire. His contributions to the arts were recognized in 2007 when he was awarded the Arts Encouragement Prize for New Artists by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. To date, he has released two CDs: “Kinko-ryū Shakuhachi Tokumaru Jūmei” (Victor Foundation for the Promotion of Traditional Culture) and “Yugen naru hibiki: Yamaguchi Gorō's Shakuhachi and Life” (Geijutsu Shuppansha). He currently presides over the Kinko-ryū Shakuhachi Gado-kai.
