Born on December 20, 1894 in Mie Prefecture, Ōyabu Shūrei (Ōyabu Kiyoshi) studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Uchida Shūdō and began teaching in 1918.
He was the head of Tamagawa-sha.
He was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, 5th class in 1947.
His career in shakuhachi spanned almost 60 years.
