Perry Yung enjoys a dual career as a theater artist/actor and a professional shakuhachi craftsman. 2002: Received the Japan/US Friendship Commission Arts Fellowship (funded by The International House of Japan and the National Endowment for the Arts). His main sensei in Japan was Kinya Sogawa, crafting in the lineage of Chikusen Tamai and playing in the Dokyoku style of Watazumi. 2003: Created Umio Umio, a shakuhachi Butoh performance piece with Kinya and Laurie Sogawa, Maura Donohue and Yoshito and Kazuo Ohno. Tokyo/Yokohama, Japan. 2005: Received Lower Manhattan Community Council Grant to create Jet Stream a Shakuhachi theater performance. New York City 2007: Composed shakuhachi music for PBS documentary Mai Donohue, - A lesson in Courage. Providence, Rhode Island. 2012: Invited concert soloist and CD studio recording with Vangelis (composer of Chariots of Fire) in Doha, Qatar. 2014: Awarded an Asian Cultural Council Artist Grant for historical shakuhachi instruments and music research in Japan. Perry teaches at annually at Zen Mountain Monastery (Mountains and Rivers Order) and Fire Lotus Temple along with guest lecturing in colleges and universities across America. He can be seen on Steven Soderbergh's Cinemax series The Knick as Ping Wu, and as Father Jun in HBO's WARRIOR . He has recorded shakuhachi for soundtracks on Warrior and Patrick Chen's film - A Father Son.
