Born November 6, 1901 in Shiga Prefecture, Ishimoto Yōfū (Ishimoto Hisayoshi) studied Ueda-ryū shakuhachi under Ueda Hōdō. He started teaching in 1922. With a career spanning more than 60 years, he was Chairman of the Kyoto Executive Committee of the Ueda-ryū National Board, special member of the Japan Academy, head of the Yōfū-sha Headquarters, Ueda-ryū Advisor.
