Ebe Shōzan (Ebe Tetsuya) was born December 23, 1890 in Niigata Prefecture. He studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Hatanaka Kozan. He became an instructor in 1932. During his 40+-year career in shakuhachi he was an advisor to the Tozan-ryū Shakuhachi Gaku-kai, head of the Tozan-ryū Shorin-kai. He was recipient of the Deep Blue Ribbon Medal and Kitami City Cultural Merit Award.
