Koide Sōzan (Koide Zenjirō) was born January 22, 1916 in Miyagi Prefecture. He studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Ebe Shōzan and became an instructor in 1939. He belonged to the Tohoku branch of the Tozan-ryū Shakuhachi Gaku-kai and heads the Wagaku-kai.
